The original draw was declared null and void after a “technical error” saw Villarreal drawn to play United despite being in the same group.
After that was corrected, United were left out of the pot by mistake when Atleti were finding out their opponents, leaving UEFA with little choice but to redraw the ties.
Elsewhere, round of 16 debutants FC Salzburg will face German giants Bayern Munich, Benfica meet Ajax and Europa League champions Villarreal are up against Juventus.
