Some say Twitter is a different world. For these guys; Joseph Okine-Cleland, Raymond Nii Amardey and Oliver Amponsah, it’s a place to unite, build friendship and family through the beautiful game of football as founders and brain behind this initiative.
Our mission is to provide the youth an opportunity to play football regardless of funding; a chance to develop their social, psychological, physical and technical/tactical skills as preparation for entry into professional teams and pro-academies.
If you’re on Twitter you might have in one way or the other come across #SoccabetProLeague or #GhTwitterLeague. If you haven’t, you might want to check it out because these guys are doing an amazing job.
It all begun through regular organized friendlies between a few tweeps. It has since grown to become one of the most exciting leagues you can find in the country at the moment.
The initiative gained interest from Soccabet Ghana, the current headline sponsor and eGotickets who were the only sponsors for the league hence the name “Soccabet Pro League”. The #SoccabetProLeague has seen a successful maiden edition.
The league commenced in February 2022 and lasted 18 weeks packed with intensive and exciting football. Matches were played every Sunday at the Accra Academy Astro Turf with 9 teams fighting to be crowned champions.
After leading the table throughout the first-half of the season, a second round abysmal performance from Aston city FC saw MoSquad FC (owned by Malik Ofori) crowned champions on Sunday, July 10, 2022.
What’s most unique about this league is the fact that all teams were formed from Twitter with most teams being owned by influencers. For example, Team Jay Fc is owned by Kalyjay, F.C. Beno owned by BENO Sarkcess, Team Efua S.C by Efua Ampofoa, KayF.C. by KayJnr, Benael F.C. owned by Benael, Atemuda FC owned by Atemuda and Philemon TV FC. Aston City F.C. is the only non-individual owned team.
Top football scouts and stakeholders like Dr. Ernest Koranteng (CEO, BAC Group), Mr. Sheikh Tophic (Member of Div. One League Board), Mr. Thierry Nyann (TV3 Network), Mr. Yaw Ampofo Jr (Sports Journalist), Sergio Manucho (Sports Journalist, Asempa FM), Mr. Evans Amewugah (Max FM), Mr. Awagah and many more joined hands to make the maiden edition a success.
This scintillating season is to be crowned with an end of season awards night which will be held at the Ridma Hotel, Mccarthy Hills on the 6th of August at 6pm.
The following awards are up for grabs;
- best player
- top scorer
- best coach
- best playmaker
- golden glove and many more
The curtain-raiser will be a second charity event dubbed “Above Fear” on the 28th of August happening on the streets of Madina, after a successful first event that saw them giving to the needy on the streets of Lapaz to crown off a successful maiden Edition.
According to the organizers, it hasn’t been an easy journey but it’s been worth it.
They are however appealing to corporate organizations/institutions and individuals to get involved and support this great initiative. It can only get better from here.
Preparations are being made towards a second season which will see an additional team joining the previous nine, due to take off from the 4th of September 2022.
It promises to be fun, action- packed and a displayer of a flurry of talents.
